In addition to its spiritual relevance and importance with regard to the history of Burmese Monks and the written language of pali sanskrit, the quality of craftsmanship and overall condition of this particular manuscript is what will strike you as being especially nice.
Each sheet, or leaf measures 23" long x 5 3/8" wide x 1/16" thick and is slightly flexible, with the exception of the one illustrated teak wood mount board, which is inflexible and used for protection and mounting of the manuscript. The single cinnabar red painted teak wood mount (in addition to the eight sanskrit panels) is elaborately hand illustrated with illuminated gold leaf details. There may have been two of these at one time; a front and a back cover between which the calligraphic spiritual writings were fastened. Attachment post is missing.
Total lot weight is 2 pounds 15.5 ounces. Individual calligraphy panel weight is approximately 3.8 ounces. The wooden mount, slightly larger at 23 1/4" long x 5 1/2 wide, weighs 13.8 ounces, and is nicely finished off with hand beveled edges. Sanskrit is one of the earliest languages known to man, and is still consistently taught in writing, and spoken in daily prayer at The School of Practical Philosophy on 79th Street in Manhattan, NY; a subsidiary of The London School of Economics.
The manuscript was acquired in India. This is a one of a kind rare to find manuscript we are pleased to offer to collectors worldwide through our eBay online store, that would make a marvelous acquisition for one who is interested in Pali Sanskrit as a language, the prayers and rules of conduct of monks, Southeast Asian manuscripts, religion and spirituality, early antiquarian books, and beautifully hand crafted, historically relevant art pieces which have served a purpose with extraordinary depth of meaning and humbling enlightenment. We appreciate your interest and thank you for your time.
